September 7th, a typical Saturday for others, but when evening came people gathered in Oakhurst for the annual Kiwanis “Run For the Gold” Car Show. The event is sponsored by Sierra-Oakhurst Kiwanis and featured a total of 122 cars. The event was held at the Oakhurst Community Park and lasted for the 7th and 8th of September, featuring everything from food vendors, a live band, tables selling various items, and, of course, the cars.
For the people that did go to this event from Minarets Key Club, one thing was for certain; it was a lot of fun. “Working at the “Run for the Gold” was a great experience. I got to meet a lot of people that were friendly. We also sold a lot of tickets for a big prize that was about $300.”, said Hunter Cornett, a freshman at the school as well as newly added member to Key Club. The tickets being sold at the event were from the 50/50 raffles held at the Car Show. For every ticket sold, the money was put into one container and whoever won the ticket drawing they would receive half of the total amount of money inside the total raised from ticket sales.
Other freshman I interviewed about their experiences came to me with similar answers to Hunter’s own. “For the first event I helped with was a lot of fun. The car show was a fun event and we raised a lot of moolah for the organization. It was really nice to see the people there buy tickets just to help us.”, is what Diamond Bernstine had to say about her experience. Another thing to occur at the Car Show was the performances of a live band that’s local to the area called “Rock Therapy”, and one thing you might not know about the band that performed was that former music teacher for Minarets, Bill Samuelson, got to perform with them.
At the end of it all, the proceeds from the event go towards mini-grants issued to k-8 teachers in the local mountain area for their classrooms. In the past, these Car Show’s have netted approximately $10,000, so thanks to this fairly large event the community gets repaid back in a positive way.
