Every year, the Slick Rock Student Film Festival takes place at the Visalia Fox Theatre. Additionally, nearly every year, members of our Mustang Media program are nominated for an award and attend this festival. This year is no different. Our school is delighted to have three nominations at the Slick Rock Film Festival this year; Cole Frausto for his animated short film Life Itself, TJ McFarland, Daniel Stevenson, and Tom Strobel for their PSA Mountain Safety, and Abbi Goodwin and Ryu Sotelo for their highlights video Hoofbeats and Highlights. We’re immensely proud of these students for their hard work in making these excellent projects.
In the past, Minarets has done quite well at the Slick Rock awards. In 2022, our media
program managed to garner eight nominations. Over the years, we’ve managed to collect over 20 nominations.
We had the opportunity to interview Abbi Goodwin, one of this year’s nominees. She’s up to win for her highlight montage Hoofbeats and Highlights along with Ryu Sotelo. When asked how it felt to be nominated for a slick rock, she stated that she was “thrilled to be nominated this year”, as it was her “biggest goal in Media”. Abbi is very proud of her submission and believes she has a “really strong shot” at winning this year.
She’s also had an overwhelmingly positive experience with the show itself. She told us “I attended the award ceremony last year and it was a really fun experience, the theater where it is held is amazing and beautiful and it is cool seeing all the other films other schools have submitted. Everyone’s energy and the adrenaline rush you get at the end when they are announcing the winners is like no other”.
We wish her and Ryu, as well as the rest of our nominees, the best of luck at the Slick Rock awards this year. The show will be held on Friday, May 10th, at the Visalia Fox Theatre. We encourage everyone to attend and support our nominees!
